Today is a milestone at the @nytimes: Arthur O. Sulzberger, Jr., retires as chair of the board, after 42 years at The Times. So many other great newspapers have crumbled over the last 20 years, but The Times is stronger than ever. 1/6
That’s because Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., crafted a new business model for The Times – twice! First, he turned it into a national newspaper with national advertising; then in recent years into a digital product financed by reader subscriptions. And we're going strong. 2/6
I’ve been at The Times 36 years, and it has changed more in the last six years than in the previous 30. The telex room is gone; podcasts are here. Arthur revolutionized this newspaper and product, even more than the legendary Adolph Ochs. 3/6
Arthur also revolutionized the NYT's values, making it a far more inclusive and diverse institution, one that covered a far broader spectrum of news. It’s wonderful to have a boss who is admired not only for vision but also for values. 4/6
When I joined The Times, reporters sometimes mocked the Sulzberger family as a den of nepotism. No longer. We’ve seen Sulzberger family members rebuild this news organization, and save it, while sacrificing their own stock dividends to fund the journalism. 5/6
When traveling with Arthur to North Korea, I made pins with Arthur’s face, claiming we would wear them to compete with the North Korean pins of their Great Leader. Arthur made me trash them – but now that he’s out, I can tell the story! And truly he was the NYT’s ‘great leader.’
So our thanks to Arthur O. Sulzberger, Jr., as he steps down as chair of the board of The NY Times. Thanks for Arthur's decades of leadership, for presiding over painful but necessary restructuring, and for ensuring that this paper remains one we’re proud to be part of.
