I've seen a good bit of murmuring about having to read Doctrine and Covenants this year and I have a couple thoughts.

In one of the first institute lessons I attended, my teacher *really* emphasized how clear the voice of the Lord is in D&C. And it's true-- it's very clear.
One reason I love D&C is how it shows us how revelation works. We gain revelation line upon line, precept upon precept.

Seeing the establishment of the Church through D&C, we see that process in a transparent way where the Lord gives instructions and correction.
Another reason the D&C is awesome is how much we can learn about temple covenants.

Reading D&C with the intent to learn how to better keep my temple covenants has been more helpful than any other book of scripture for me personally on this topic. Good stuff.
D&C 25 is one of my favorite sections of scripture because it shows how much the Lord trusts and values women.

It provides a clear picture of the Lord's vision for righteous women and I am grateful to have this section of scripture to turn to and learn from.
Is the tone harsh in D&C at times?

Yes, but the Lord is sometimes harsh in His dealings. I don't see much to be gained by placing my own expectations of how God should act on God rather than reading about how God has acted and accepting that.
I'm really excited to be reading Doctrine and Covenants and I am confident that the Lord will have much in the way of instruction for me that I gain through humbling myself before the Lord.

It'll be a great year with a lot that the Lord can teach you.
