There are a lot of calls for a "transparent and open" Gsoc investigation which might be giving the impression the ombudsman will be publicly releasing a big report at some stage. This is not what usually happens unfortunately. 1/4 https://twitter.com/RobOHanrahan/status/1344660248787824640
Gsoc investigations are confidential, as are the final reports. For example no official report was released into the last fatal garda shooting, that of murderer Mark Hennessy in May 2018. That doesn't mean there definitely won't be some detail released by Gsoc. 2/4
They take it on a case by case basis. e.g. when gardai lost a sub-machine gun on a Dublin street, Gsoc did release a short summary of its findings. But in shooting incidents this is highly unusual. 3/4
Of course, if it decides a may have garda acted criminally, that would be referred to the DPP and details of the incident would be released in any subsequent trial. And obviously some details will also be revealed in the inquest. into George Nkencho's death. 4/5
But expectations of a comprehensive, public report from Gsoc are unrealistic. My guess is, at most, Gsoc will release a short statement in a few months on whether any criminal charges or disciplinary actions are to be recommended. And little else. 5/5
