Setting publications as an expectation for med school applications incentivizes superficial engagement in projects to pad your CV rather than substantive involvement in the hard work of research, and also contributes to inequity in medical school admissions
Not everyone who goes to med school wants to do research, nor should we expect them to. & if you want to do research, you’ll learn a lot more by throwing yourself into 1 or 2 projects that might not be published before you apply than by doing random tasks to get mid-author credit
When I was in undergrad I had the chance to do some small things that could’ve landed me on papers. I had limited time, so I chose not to to focus on my project, which is still not published, but in essays & interviews I could really talk about it in depth & I learned a lot more
