yeah! & i think some of it stems also from a belief, willful or otherwise, that if you don't get a joke, you must be the butt of the joke. i also almost wrote target instead of butt (lol) & think that's part of it too--the belief that jokes are hostile, esp if you're 'excluded.' https://twitter.com/Mer_Squared/status/1344656281437687811
people sense that everyone is laughing at something but they don't see what's funny, so assume a defensive posture. add that to "you can't just say you don't like a piece of media, you have to give it the Your Fave Is Problematic treatment & critique it in moral-ethical terms"
as a general tendency over the last few years, factor in the language of ableism often leveraged re: autistic ppl not getting sarcasm, irony, certain kinds of tone-dependent humor in heavily ironypoisoned online spaces, which then gets wielded like a blunt instrument in
service of this very humorless brand of moralizing wokescolding. also, As An Autist (TM), i am actually much better at parsing the tone of ironypoisoned posts than i am at parsing tone IRL, also, we're not humorless automatons, don't use autism to police ppl making jokes lol
like just as a side tangent [please imagine my voice is dripping with sarcasm] i love when people invoke autism as a gotcha point to criticize others for being ironic online without tone markers or whatever, it doesn't perpetuate the stereotype of autistic people as robots at all
