Let’s talk the realities of the WI State Assembly not enforcing COVID workplace protections. Each legislator is impacted in a unique way based on their personal circumstances. Here are some of my impacts:
Appleton is just far enough away to not always drive back & forth daily, which means overnight stays are easier when in session. I’d planned to stay with my sister who lives in Madison.
Because I will be routinely exposed to maskless GOP lawmakers and staff, this is no longer a safe plan for her family. This means an Air BnB or hotel which then means per diem to cover those lodging expenses.
It also means not being able to safely visit with my son who is in school in Madison. He lives with 3 roommates— exposing Henry would expose them too.
Unlike many of my colleagues who return home to full houses, I am lucky I can isolate alone in district if exposed on the job. However, I’m the only daughter in town who needs to be available for my 77-yr old, widowed mother. If exposed, I need to isolate from her safe.
Many Wisconsinites are grappling with difficult issues about workplace safety. By now, most employers enforce mask wearing, allow for social distancing or have accommodations for virtual work. Asking for reasonable accommodations like enforcing CDC guidelines is not extreme.
Putting Covid-19 safety practices in place on the job is a workers rights issue. WI Assembly Democrats stand with workers everywhere in our quest for reasonable accommodations, enforcement of CDC recommendations & the right to work without threat of harm to ourselves and others.
