ICCL calls for an independent and effective investigation into the death of George Nkencho.

Here is a guide to the right to life and the state's obligations to effectively investigate lethal use of force by state agents: https://www.echr.coe.int/Documents/Guide_Art_2_ENG.pdf
Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights sets out the obligations on the State to carry out an effective investigation of all instances of deaths caused by State actors. These obligations are that
the investigation (or combination of investigations) must be independent, adequate, prompt, and transparent - including the participation of the victim's family.
At this point the GSOC investigation is the primary mechanism and it must be guided by these standards.
There must also be an inquest and there may be other investigations also. The key legal issue is that the State is obliged to ensure these standards are met.
It is essential that the family of Mr Nkencho, and the wider public, are kept fully informed of the nature and progress of all relevant investigations.

ICCL would like to express our deepest sympathies to the Nkencho family and all of those affected by these tragic events.
