/ Resource #3

If seemingly predicting the onset of a global pandemic within Ch. 1 isnt enough to get you hooked, @BryanAlexander Academia Next touches on a number of trends anyone breaking into higher ed should be aware of. My favorite discussion centered on Collaboration...
/ *Disclaimer* I work for Rize Education, a company that supports the Lower Cost Model Consortium’s (LCMC) course sharing model, so I’m a little biased toward the potential benefits of collaboration / course sharing….
/ Finances are often the poster child for the benefits of collaboration. From back-of-office infrastructure to student retention to driving enrollment, budget-constrained schools can do more with less by partnering ( @AlexanderKafka w/ @chronicle just did a whole report on this)
/ But Academia Next reminds us that the promise of collaboration is not just financial incentive - it can be a student-centric strategy. For example, intercampus teaching can expand student access to curriculum and increase the diversity of instructors and peers.
/ Despite this promise, Bryan acknowledges his previous prediction of greater institutional collaboration failed to materialize. Why? “Schools tend to see each other as competitors rather than allies, a perception likely to strengthen as demographic and economic pressures mount"
/ So will this change? “Institutional collaboration may grow, just more slowly than I expected. Projects may start small or proceed quietly, taking time to build structures of trust and reliability. Stealth mode could well be preferable to publicity for political reasons”
/ My early take is that collab. will take off in the next few years where those structures of trust and reliability have been prioritized. Effective partnerships will expand curricular breadth & pathways to employment for students while improving the institution’s bottom line.
