A potato thread.
Potatoes are brought from the field to the "Muddy Shed" where they are doule washed to get the red soil off. From there up a conveyor belt.....
To the Pack shed. Though a set of brushing rollers and hot air to dry them. Then onwards to the automatic sorting tables.
Into the bags, small, medium, large and extra large. Potatoes with blemishes or a bit of green colour are bought by the staff for R8/bag so that they can make extra money, the rest are sent to charity.
Each bag is weighed unsuring there is a minimum of an extra 100grms. Then stitched closed by Naas Botha. Packet in pre-pallet bins then onto the Distribution Shed.
On a good day, with 4 tractors and 35 workers in the field, we can harvest, wash, pack and load 7 500 pockets. Its a madhouse!
