There is some discussion about what European public opinion would hold on #CAI. Let's review the evidence, based on our unique public opinion #survey from September and October 2020 in 10 EU countries on the representative sample of more than 15K respondents. (1/5)
There are far more EU citizens in the ten countries who support engaging with China in terms of trade and investment than those who oppose it. (1 are those who strongly disagree, 7 those who strongly agree, 4 those who are neutral). (2/5)
At the same time, promotion of trade and investment is not the most favoured policy towards China. Even more important for the respondents are cooperation on global issues and addressing the cyber security aspects. (3/5)
Moreover, in Germany, we have found that the public is willing to emphasize human rights in their dealings with China even if it comes with the economic costs. (4/5)
To sum up, there is no conclusive evidence either that the EU public is in favour of or against the #CAI. Still, there are indications, that the EU public wants to continue economic exchanges with China, although not at the expense of other policy issues. (5/5)
