A highlight of my work is talking to owners about the volatile reality of operating. Ingenuity/grit shine through brightest when things didn’t go as planned. Those days in the trenches are long, but seasoned operators acknowledge the biggest growth came from overcoming obstacles.
2020 offered hard-to-anticipate volatility with layered implications. It was often impossible to know how to make the “right” decisions. But as the year comes to a close, a few notes:
- Relationships still matter. Those with strong ones going into the pandemic faired better. And many have stronger bonds now than prior.
- New energy created new opportunity. The amount of new endeavors launched is an achievement. Not all will last, but all can contribute to systemic strength.
- Operators must be agile optimists. Those that are spent little time wallowing and got to work listening, strategizing, shifting, and solving.
- Boasting and pride are expensive. Those that lack transparency in normal times are particularly vulnerable when the tide goes out.

- Projections are comically irrelevant, and you can’t plan for everything. Structure accordingly.
2020 was a particularly challenging year for operators. But it was an important one. May it’s value start to come into focus for you as we enter the new year!
