I noticed I haven't heard about a lot of "big" indie games this year (apart from the deservingly successful Hades, and to some extent Spelunky 2), and so I thought I should make a thread about 2020's indie games hidden gems. Let's go!
Vidiot Game is a Wario Ware-like available for free on Steam; it is hilarious, and will keep you on your toes with its series of cryptic yet simple micro-games. It might be even funnier than the series it draws inspiration from.
The Corridor is a short walking-sim in the spirit of Stanley Parable that plays with the player's expectations, mock their actions and provoke them. Not as clever as I wish it'd be, and the joke gets old after a while, but for the time it lasts it was worth it.
We should talk is one of my best surprises of the year. It's a great self-contained experience where we discuss with some patrons at a hip bar, while our partner waits for us at home and texts us. The innovative dialogue system was a charm to play with.
From the studio behind the charming GNOG, Dépanneur Nocturne lets you unravel the mysteries that lie in a local convenience store (called dépanneurs or deps for short in Quebec). It does great at setting a weird but cozy mood, and putting a lot of depth in a small world.
While just being a demo, Starstruck Prologue left a big impression on me with its bizarre claymation world, its absurd story and its mix between an adventure and a rhythm game. The rhythm portion has a strikingly good UI/UX and some slightly original mechanics.
I've been awaiting Later Daters ever since I played it at Queerness and Games Con more than a year ago: Later Daters is a pretty unconventional dating sim, placing you in the shoes of an elder looking for love (or not!). It's inclusive, funny, cute, it checks all the boxes!
An ingenious puzzle game about a long-distance relationship, A Fold Apart will charm you with its paper-like visuals and its lovable protagonists, trying their best to connect with each other. Not challenging enough to my taste, but well-designed nonetheless.
Death Come True is an FMV with a good production value and decent acting like we rarely see in this genre. I haven't had the chance to get far into it yet, but this kind of game with that level of quality is rare enough that it's worth mentioning.
Aaaand that's it! Hope this will be useful to some of you, and don't hesitate to share your own recommendations :D
