US internet was the defining story of 2000s, US SaaS/China internet of 2010s, 2020s will scrip the winning story of India tech (internet + software) - >$1T market cap creation by 2030
Building for the world: The incremental Indian founder is more likely to build for global markets (SaaS, Consumer, Fintech) than ever before. First non-SaaS global unicorn from India will emerge in the next 2 years
Consolidation in Fin-tech: Monoline companies will eventually be gobbled by large platforms / come together. It will be triggered by margin erosion in specific revenue monolines
Logistics / B2B will shine: This is easily one of the least appreciated sector in India tech. Sentiment will inflect on such businesses as people realise they are the building blocks of our economy and will be very large biz in future
Deepening of consumer internet markets: will be led by trends such gentrification of platforms (separate destinations for Bharat and India), emergence of 2nd order / derivative business models (live streaming for games)
Come to Jesus moment for India SaaS: India SaaS is coming-of-age. As our companies jostle with the best globally, there will moments of doubt, reflection and learning. We will see Indian SaaS teams skew more towards international talent. 20+ $1B+ companies next 5 years
IPOs new badge of honour: More than fundraise /unicorn status, IPOs will become the new source of pride for companies, founders, teams and VCs. Next 2 years will create more wealth in ecosystem than the last decade put together.
Flight to quality: Market leading companies with good / improving economic models will continue to attract capital interest. On the other hand, companies with fragile economics will struggle
The Big Boys pushback: The battle between narrow verticals and wide horizontals will intensify as the latter looks to secure / enter new profit pools ahead of IPOs / liquidity events. This will result in short-term volatility in specific sectors and may even culminate in M&A
