Been watching the unedifying pile-on @Lenniesaurus. Happily defended by @neilhimself and @JaneyGodley. Especially claims we all ought to speak ‘proper English’. Ghastly. I honestly thought this horrible idea (that some languages were ‘better’ than others) had died in the fifties.
I don’t want to add to the delusions of grandeur of those attacking her but the shallowness of the claims that Scots is a ‘made up language’ have to arise from the cloth ears and stupidity of those whose impoverished social circle doesn’t include those who speak it.
That we have seen attacks on Gaelic is beyond disgraceful. As if some God-given right to destroy communities by buying second homes should trump the right of the community to house itself. And there you have the nub of both attacks.
Anything that directs focus to the natural community is anathema to the right. It’s odd, you might think they would value the individual, because in theory they are all for freedom. But they are not. They want you to be free to want the same thing, to compete for it.
Anything that creates little communities, different ways of seeing, is an enemy to this. So language is an obvious target.
