For 5 years our team has worked tirelessly to educate South Asians about systems of oppression and how to dismantle them. Social media today is full of brown feminism accounts - in 2015 we were the only ones. We love to see it. But our community’s fixation on caste makes our
heart sink. So called feminists, advocating for gender rights, whilst promoting “Jatti Gin” is so beyond saddening. If your platform is about girls but you love caste, all you’re saying is ‘I want to fight the oppressive systems that harm me, but keep the ones that benefit me.”
This isn’t feminism. True feminism is about the eradication of ALL systems of oppression, even the ones you benefit from as a woman. So that means, caste, race, class, skin colour, ALL of it. This is not a cherry pick buffet. It IS all or nothing. When we see people like this
we feel proud that we helped give women the confidence to speak their truth and demand equal rights, but we also feel deeply saddened that by doing this you missed the bigger point. If you’re a brown feminist out there right now building a platform that “smashes patriarchy” as so
many of you are then remember that in order to do this you MUST be anti caste. Otherwise you are just the South Asian equivalent of a white feminist.
