Leaders like Johnson, Trump, or Macron, do not resign themselves to their fate and try to do something about it. Merkel opted to accommodate the new situation to soften the blow.
The former often looks nastier, riskier, and more prone to disaster. The latter the smart move. But in the long run, Merkel's approach passively accepts decline, and that will be where things end up going. The others, at least try to create opportunities to avoid such fate.
