Being a fellow developer who has been disappointed by their college, I also spent hours thinking and debating about "fixing" the education system.
Here are my views on this topic đŸ§”
Students always have some expectations with their colleges to make them ready for the job market. Recently, colleges have been failing miserably.
When students explore the job market themselves, they realize that the skillsets taught in colleges are not the ones in demand, which sparks the discussion around what colleges can do better. Still, actually, the job market has evolved.
The traditional education system was designed for conventional jobs.
A bachelor's degree is no longer a barrier to getting a good-paying job in tech in the current job market. Similarly, doing a master's is not the only way to grow your career.
With the rise of the startups, there is a tectonic shift in the requirement, especially on tech-related jobs; the demand has shifted from general computer science principles to tech-focused expertise.
The tech field has various specializations now like Frontend Web, Backend, ML, Native mobile development, etc., all these fields are developing fast. Every year, devs are innovating and introducing new best practices. No college curriculum can keep up with it.
Once teens and their parents become aware of the shift in the market demand, they would surely reconsider all the other means of educations apart from colleges.
The Boot camps and micro-universities are on their way to becoming mainstream. They are more successful than colleges in empowering students to get high paying jobs.
Most of us are well aware of these established boot camps like @lambdaschool, @holbertonschool, etc., but there are indeed some good emerging players in India as well like @pestotech, @10kdesigners, @AvalonMeta, and @ElevateLabstech
Incredible communities like these will help the new wave of self-taught professionals to socialize, discuss ideas, and learn together.
I have already met some awesome GenZ devs now, who are way more aware of the market, discussing new ideas, and collaborating on building their own business online. I am excited to see where we will go from here.
Thank you for reading this till the end. I would love to hear more thoughts on this subject. 😊
