Film has had a tough time in 2020. However, I think we've had some excellent British films released this year. Here is a thread of some stand-outs
THE RUNAWAYS - An entertaining adventure about three children and their donkey who try to escape the troubles that their deceased father has left behind. Features a great performance by @MollyWindsor97
SUMMERLAND. Heartwarming romantic drama that has Gemma Arterton giving one of her finest performances as a woman who doesn't want to take in a refugee during wartime but soon learns a few things about herself.
LYNN + LUCY. Tough going drama about two friends who are torn apart because of a tragedy. Brilliant performances from @Roxstarr91 and @NicholaABurley really hit hard.
PERFECT 10. A coming of age story set in the world of gymnastics. British kitchen sink drama at its best with a stand-out performance from Frankie Box.
DEATH OF A VLOGGER. Documentary style film that combines scares and discussions on mental health.
LOVERS ROCK. One of the most pure romance films you are likely to see. A day and night in the life of a house party and its inhabitants. You'll have Janet Kay's "Silly Games" on repeat afterwards.
HOST. The breakout lockdown hit of the year, and genuinely scary as well. Best watched on a laptop.
1917. A war drama about two young men on a race against the clock to deliver a message to the frontline.
ROCKS. A coming of age film that could not be more prescient if it tried. Brilliantly written, smartly directed and, above all, wonderfully acted by all the girls. A real stand-out.
PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD. @Aiannucci's delightfully funny riff on the iconic character is non-stop entertaining. The whole cast are wildly entertaining from start to finish.
MAKE UP. If David Lynch made a film about the off-season at a British holiday park then it would be like Make Up. An atmospheric and haunting film with a great central performance by @MollyWindsor97
ONE MAN AND HIS SHOES. It takes a brave person to really look at the dark side of Michael Jordan and his shoe empire. Bravo to @yemi_bamiro on his excellent consumer documentary.
SAINT MAUD. Rose Glass's debut feature is a frighteningly scary melodrama. Morfydd Clark is phenomenal in the lead.
MOGUL MOWGLI.
@rizwanahmed gives an outstanding performance as Zed, a musician whose hearing is taken from him. Anyone who has worked with loud music for years will recognise the worry that Zed goes through.
HIS HOUSE. A refugee couple struggling with life in England. This, at first, looks like a standard horror flick but very soon it turns into something much bigger and scarier. This seems to have gone under the radar a bit. Which is a shame because it genuinely scary.
WHITE RIOT. A documentary about the formation of Rock Against Racism. Using archival footage and new interviews, it captures the exact need as to why the protest movement was, and continues to be, so important. It is filled with fascinating information.
MUSCLE. A brutal viewing experience. A film that oozes toxic masculinity, yet at its heart is a story about it crumbling before the eyes of those who are its core. An amazing performance from @craigfairbrass is the icing on the cake.
ETERNAL BEAUTY. @CraigRoberts10 film is a tender tale about life and love of a schizophrenic. Featuring a career best performance from Sally Hawkins.
