When I hear talk of a ‘new normal’ I have no idea what that means. The word ‘Normal’ was only embedded in the English language in the 19th century. It’s origin is the Latin for a ‘carpenter’s square’. Is getting back to ‘normal’ the height of our ambition ? [2/7]
Recently, at @BPS_DSEP conference psychologists shared views on lockdown. ‘New normal’ didn’t appear. Instead, the picture was one of complexity. Humans desire certainty. What we need to thrive - especially in a crisis - is psychological flexibility & social solidarity [3/7]

Scientists, including psychologists, have led from the front during this pandemic. They have warned politicians over many years over the need for pandemic planning. Wise leaders need to realise an alliance across science is needed to #BuildBackBetter [6/7]

Each of us already has a ‘vaccine’ against despair which we have to guard every day. That is #Hope. In the face of crisis, our best approach is to focus our effort and energy on what we control. Our own choices can make a difference to life changes in 2021. #HappyNewYear
