What this officer has in his hands in a canister of mace. It is dispersed by hand. Tear gas is a 40mm canister loaded into a launcher. They are not the same weapon and have different effects, but the are constantly misidentified. https://twitter.com/TCparkresponder/status/1344485747563237377
The National Guard is almost never on a riot line. They provide support for other agencies to engage. It could even be argued that the threat of incoming NG is better at instilling fear than their actual presence—why baseless rumors are unhelpful.
