Charities and politicians are nearly equally relentless in going after your money, especially with the elderly. I've been helping my parents a lot more with their affairs lately, and the sheer volume of mailings they get is overwhelming. Moreover, the tactics used are awful.
My dad gets nearly 10 requests for donations per day, and some outlets send 2-3x per week. Once they find a sucker, er, good concerned citizen, they're all-in. It can be overwhelming.
My "favorite" tactic is when they send a check for a nominal amount, like $2.19. "But we know you won't cash it, because you care about us and know that we can't really afford good people like yourself to cash it. And while you're at it, here's a form to send another donation."
