I feel like most of the family entertainment being put out for black families is more focused on pleasing and entertaining the black adult than black children.
There's an crisis of imagination in the black youth. They're forced to grow out of imagination faster than their peers. And are often forgotten especially 7-14 demographic
There's this weird jump from shows like doc mcstuffins to things that aren't quite age appropriate. So most kids jump to sports. But my daughter is 6 and she's too old for a lot of shows and isn't quite mature for what's available when it comes to seeing herself on screen
And you put on these 90s sitcoms that you watched growing up like sister sister or family matters and realize they're way too young to watch that shit. And you question your upbringing lol.
We must create stories that allow our children to be kids as long as possible because being a kid is an amazing thing.
I had a 8 year old black boy tell me that he wanted to buy his momma a house. And while that sounds admirable it broke my heart because he's thinking about things an 8 year shouldn't even be thinking about. He should be dreaming of going to space, magic school, being a super hero
Saving the world. But these are the circumstances that we face today. That they face today. How can we build spaces for them to be a kid for as long as possible. To dream bigger than ever before.
