Catching up on @TheHerleBurly episode with Amanda Lang, and it was frustrating to hear Jenni Byrne spouting obvious lies about the carbon tax -- and not have them get pushed back on. So here's a really quick thread that does that. #cdnpoli #ableg
Myth #1: The carbon tax will cost families money.

This is false. We have the rebates, and the Parliamentary Budget Officer has studied their impact. Their conclusion? 8/10 Canadians will get more than they pay -- and this includes the impact of costs businesses pass through.
Now, Myth #2: the carbon tax will disproportionately harm lower-income households.

Again, false. Here's a chart of the distributional analysis. As you can see, the lowest quintile benefits the most, while the top quintile (the rich) pay the most.
But what about rural and northern residents, who may have older and more energy-intensive heating systems? Jenni brought Myth #3 up, and it's also false. That's because there's a 10% top-up for people living in rural and remote areas. Of course, she didn't mention this.
Conservatives are, of course, welcome to dislike the carbon tax -- and they're encouraged to propose their own ideas for how we can address climate change. But they shouldn't be allowed to trade in arguments that are so easily proven false.
