Artists: They build you up to tear you down. Make sure as you’re ascending, to put back money and diversify your investments. DO NOT LET THEM DEIFY YOU and don’t believe that you will get grace from the masses (even Christians) if you fall or change.
When Mike Brown and Trayvon died, I saw this coming. I never really fit in Christian evangelical culture so when things began to shift, I saw it. I wasn’t under the spell. I’m SO THANKFUL I never fully fit. I can only imagine what would have happen if I didn’t build my own.
Honestly, being financial dependent on one group of people just isn’t smart regardless of your industry. You need to buy some real estate, stocks, start another business as you’re growing what you are doing.
People love to threaten me with I’m never booking you or streaming your music again. Although those people usually have never done either... if they could they would make it their business to take food out of my wife and kids mouth. I just laugh. I’m not dependent solely on music
DO NOT LET PEOPLE CONTROL YOUR FUTURE. I was so naive to think that Christian music was anything more than a business. It’s the business of selling religion to the religious, hope to the hopeless, and righteousness to the self righteous. 1 out of 3 of those resonate with me.
I wouldn’t be jaded enough to say that EVERYONE in the industry feels that way. There’s some REAL DEAL people out here but the SYSTEM is messed up cause messed up people are in it. I’d say the same about the American church. Am I judging? No, I’m included. I’m saying be aware...
I say all this because there’s gonna be a new crop of naive artists and fans that are blind to the history of the American church, race, and the business. MLK wasn’t blind but we don’t listen to history so we often have to learn the hard way. We always think we are different.
Make SURE you don’t leave your livelihood in ONE GROUP of people’s hands because if you change or they change... they will try and strip you of it all. DO NOT LET THEM.
