Thread - Crossing
Sheff Utd put in 23 crosses vs Burnley. Only 3 were "accurate" (hit a Blades player target). Accurate crosses aren't always the answer/main thing to look for BUT that level of output raises questions on delivery OR movement of strikers to attack ball in....
1st example

Couple of things to highlight here. 1 cross quality is poor. Zero pace, not behind the defensive line and short.
However check the movement/desire to attack key areas of the box. 1 man in the box in Mousset. Brewster not attacking box, Basham similar.
Example 2

We work a great opening down the left. Smart movement tbf to Brewster. Really poor execution on the cross on weaker foot under not much pressure but again look at the box and lack of numbers in penalty area. Only Mousset when cross comes in
Example 3

This isn't a great ball in by Basham BUT look at the strikers. Reacting to the cross rather than anticipating by making a run across the near post to get in front of their marker/free CB. On their heels & not static rather than on the move.
Example 4

This is another brilliantly worked opening and tbf to Baldock who i have championed alot this season this is a poor delivery. Brewster actually makes a nice movement here and gestures for the cut back but George doesn't lift his head.
Example 5

This one hurts to watch back. Open Burnley up so well with brilliant play by Enda. Again the quality of final ball by Mcgoldrick on weaker foot is very poor BUT forwards are making runs into areas they are marked again.
Example 6

This was the 1st and only time in the game we crossed early with any kind of quality. At least this resulted in a 2nd ball win and shot on target.
Example 7

Poor cross. Nothing forwards can do with 1 that doesn't reach them. Need to be hitting depth on those crosses.
Example 8

The best cross in the game. Hard one to finish due to pace on ball but he's picked a man out 4 yards from goal
Example 9

Really poor from Ozzy. Gives Burke nothing here and it's not a flat delivery hard to defend which is key if picking an area rather than a man
Example 10

Probably one that annoys me the most about us. That is as good a ball in as you'll see. Flat with whip. Misses 1st man. It's bang in the must be attacked area.
So the truth is it's a combination of poor delivery at times then when we do deliver the strikers aren't attacking right areas and the box has 1/2 in at the most. We will not score goals like this. Baldock touched on Attacking chemistry in his interview & i think that's spot on..
The chopping & changing of forward line (often enforced) has left players in doubt of what delivery is required to who & timing of runs is therefore off. Brewster noticeably looks for cutbacks, low crosses behind the defender making lots of movements towards the penalty spot....
If that's what he wants then we need to work on lifting our head when we get in down the sides & hitting those cut backs. If we are delivering early then crosses need to miss 1st man & be in behind the defensive line to force defenders to make a decision
These are the type of risk/reward passes Liverpool play reguarly from their full backs hitting the space between defender andGK & we don't do this often enough. We must also find a way to get bodies into the box. It's imperative we have at least 3/4 bodies in there for crosses
One to thing add.....Look at the positions we got into, down the sides, into the box, free of markers. The system worked. A system's job is to do the work box to box. In that final action it's down to player decision making & quality.
So we can criticise the slow ball movement at times BUT here's reasons why we do that and look for the "better" opportunity, because when we are getting in and putting the ball into the box it's resulting in not much.
This is also why it's absolutley key until we bring in a new RCM that as soon as Lunny is available he is back into the team. Without his energy and timing of runs into the box we have zero midfield goal threat
