I'm ashamed for how quickly I supported Bruce Mitchell. Assuming he did the proper research, I praised his column. Anything I did for the Torch, I sent to Wade. I had no idea Bruce had the ability to self-pub there. By praising his piece, I enabled Bruce to
conduct himself the way he did thereafter. I don’t know how much I am to blame, but am holding myself accountable for my part.

I should have questioned his research & who he talked to before arriving at the conclusions he did before publishing.
As information came out & proved him wrong, Bruce refused to acknowledge his wrongs and apologize to those affected by his words. I was defending a principle of transparency and commending his courage despite the risk, but did not confirm with him that he did it the right way.
I thought his timing was alright because he felt there was an incomplete story with questions regarding the pandemic I thought he asked privately before going public, like good journalists and columnists do, especially in tragedies akin to Jon Huber’s.

The next evening I
privately advised him to quiet down and invited him to talk. I felt he was in his head too much and needed to vent, then be told of what he’d done, and needed to do. All I told him, though, was he was off the rails. He said he might be, but declined my offer. I thought there was
no way Bruce would throw away his reputation and credibility so flippantly, but he did. I should have been diligent and patient before praising his piece. I feel my support contributed to the negativity Bruce continued to dispel. I need to do
better, and will learn from this. I was very wrong in my support of Bruce, and apologize to the Huber family, and everyone else who was negatively affected in every way by what Bruce perpetrated, and his conduct I enabled through support. Bruce put Wade and the Torch
in a tough spot by keeping up his antics and not backing down or admitting fault, and rightly suffered the consequences. Bruce is now off Twitter, thankfully. I just hope he's okay and seeks the help he needs to recognize his responsibility to atone for his actions and inactions.
