1/ When RW twitter refers to "therapy", they are typically referring to something that looks like this:
2/ It's very clear there is little "work" being done here. The women are smiling at each other. The "client" is getting absolution and a paid confident. This is "fake and gay" and is rightly derided.
3/ Actual therapy is not "talking about your problems", it's identifying and problem solving. If you're still seeing a therapist after 8-12 sessions, unless it's within the context of a lifetime of trauma or PD, you likely have a bad therapist or you're lying to them/yourself.
4/ Most therapists are bad, for the same reasons most of any X are bad (and bad therapists don't tend to use effective treatments). People are also really good at lying to themselves. Put the two together and this is why therapy looks like a "hollow institution".
5/ There are specific treatments that work for specific problems, and there are therapists that are effective, and there are people that are ernest and honest people with real problems seeking help. It takes this combination for "therapy" to work.
