1/ Peyote stitch is a really versatile form of seed bead work that was invented by the ancient Egyptians. It’s very versatile and can be works flat, tubular, in the round, or to cover a 3D object. It also uses a lot less thread than some other stitches.

2/ To teach kids to sew, start by using a plastic needle that is sold in knitting sections of craft stores, & use embroidery floss as thread. Use plastic canvas or felt 2 sew on. This gives them practice using the needle and threading it before they move to sharps.

You might be fascinated by history of lacemaking: it was so sought after when lace collars were in style, lace was worth its weight in gold. Young women went blind trying to make it bc bright light made the threads brittle, so they had only a candle 4 light.

Placement of mosaic lines have different classical names (see photo.) The most famous mosaics in churches were made of glass pancakes chopped into rectangle pieces with the cut (“riven”) edge up. The curved fractures & different angles caused a glittering effect.

A recent trend in beadwork is to include mathematics and science. I’m really loving it!

Embroidery machines have kind of put an end to artistic hand embroidery, yet the machines we have still can’t compare to some of the things people used to wear, which included real pearls, silk & golden threads, & a lot of texture and lace that no longer exist.

Making glads beads is difficult and requires a lot of specialized equipment and steps. It was trendy for about ten years, and now other crafts seem more popular. Manufactured glass beads used to be made from about 1.5 cm in to .5 mm, but now only about 1.3 mm.

The Art Nouveau or Jugendstihl movement was started by an attempt to turn all creative work into art: park benches, magazine covers, etc. It features almost no straight lines.
The later Art Deco and Bauhaus movements were reactions to all the lavish curves.

A trick to remove the threads left after you rip out a machine seam is to lay duct tape along the threads and pull them out. To keep fine fabrics from getting caught in the machine and keep seams from being wavy, put a 3” wide strip of tissue paper under the seam.

When sewing, you can make a cheap fabric seem more expensive by adding another layer of fabric underneath it and sewing the two layers as one. For example, cheap satin can be made to seem like expensive duchesse satin used for wedding dresses by doing this.

A popular craft for men right now is blacksmithing. This is actually a combination of technology and true art, as in the case of damascene steel and Japanese katanas.

An easy way to knit is to use a knitting loom (not a machine): it helps one to make all stitches the same size, right from the start, with a low learning curve. Hats and scarves are very simple and other things can be made using patterns. Fun way to make gifts!

Making leather goods such as shoes and bags is a lot harder than sewing fabric and requires special machines and needles. I worked in a sweat shop where we made rodeo queen outfits, and every time we made a mistake we had to cover the holes with leather “flames.”

Pompom animals are an underrated craft. I used to buy some really cute Sanrio ones when I was a kid which I tried to emulate when I grew up and taught it to my kids. Main tip is to start by finding or trimming a base, then place parts *within* pile, not on top.

15/ Couture is one of the few Renaissance-style guilds left. No one can say they are doing it without approval of the Chambre Syndicale De La Haute Couture. All garments must be made & embellished by hand & follow many other rules. True artistry in fabric!

A craft I wish was still popular & I would love to try is paper marbling. It’s done by dropping paint with ox gall or other nonpolar chemicals that float on water & using combs to create swirls, then laying paper across the top to pick up paint. Stunning results!

One of the most essential and versatile craft supplies is wire. It can be soldered into sculptures, made into jewelry, used as an armature for costumes, and attach almost anything to anything else.

One of my obsessions is fractal crafts such as beaded beads. If I had the time and was serious about art, I would probably try to create fractal art the size of a living room. Ah! Maybe some day!

A great surface to use for beadwork is a piece of velvet. It keeps the beads from rolling around & lets the needle pick them up. If you’re about to do beadwork (not just regular jewelry or whatever) with seed beads, try sorting them into size groups first.

Mosaics are like painting w solid drops of paint that don’t change size and can’t be mixed. It’s best to never throw away those “weird” pieces that don’t fit in: they are almost always the ones needed to fill in little gaps at the end! Kinda like people

One of the most interesting things to me about art and crafts is the relative appearance of color. Even though colors correspond to wavelengths, they seem to change in value based on other colors placed near them.
