Some of the discourse I see re home ownership in the UK makes no sense. It’s not the norm for you to be purchasing in your twenties. The average age to buy your first property in the UK is 34. (source: https://www.finder.com/uk/first-time-buyer-statistics)
Furthermore, it is NOT the norm for your first property purchase to be solo- EVEN in the days when property was cheaper, for example, between 94-96: 64% of first time property purchases were made as a couple. Between 2014-2016, this jumped to 77%. Source: https://www.moneysupermarket.com/mortgages/first-time-buyers-report/)
Property ownership is the biggest and most popular vehicle of wealth transfer in our society- statistically, this is usually achieved as a couple. So for everyone harping on about building ‘generational wealth’, it’s not something you do alone!
A lot of the discourse I see re generational wealth is very individualistic which makes no sense when you look at stats on wealth- (using property ownership as a marker). And especially in the economic downturn coming? Moving solo makes less sense than ever before.
Also as an aside- I speak about this often- your fave billionaires aren’t even solo, they either came up of a shit ton of angel investment, VC funding or like Bezos had family rich enough to give him circa $250K! The romanticisation and promotion of ‘grinding solo’ makes no sense
