Today has seen the announcement of further school closures, and the new strain makes it likely that this will soon become yet more widespread. @UKRI_News PhD bursary policy is now absolutely untenable . Hundreds, maybe thousands, of parents doing PhDs will be desperately 1/6
anxious tonight. Many of us have already had our children home full time for many months this year, only to be told by UKRI that “time lost” is not a concern for them. Well I can assure you @ProfRoryDuncan that when you have none, “time lost” is a very real concern. 2/6
We, and our supervisors, had already worked tirelessly to amend our projects throughout the 8mths that UKRI apparently consulted with us, only to offer desperately insufficient support. Let’s get real: the current offer will stunt an entire cohort of overwhelmingly women 3/6
researchers. The impact of the pandemic on primary carers is intense, complex and ongoing. Some of us will not be able to complete our PhDs. Others will scrape by, but with less publications, conferences and training than our childless peers. If we were employees we could, 4/6
undeniably, have been furloughed for many months for childcare reasons but we are just expected to somehow achieve the same outcomes in less time. We are stressed, angry and frustrated. We need more money on the table @UKRI_News 3mths extension or (for some) nothing at all is 5/6
hopelessly insufficient to offer us a fair opportunity, in the light of the realities of Covid for parents. Please support us to be the researchers we deserve to be by funding our extensions properly and fairly. We will not disappear. @PandemicPGRs #phdchat 6/6
