Ethan reminds us how RWD came about during the smartphone revolution to solve a big problem at the time: it's just silly and unsustainable making multiple websites for different devices.

But Intrinsic Web Design doesn't similarly solve an immediate problem like that... 2/10
...Instead, it solves the problem we've *always* had as web developers: trying to make designers ideas a reality whilst building resilient layouts that adapt to the content, rather than the layout dictating to the content how to be sized and shaped. 3/10
As @piccalilli_ just said to me: 4/10 https://twitter.com/piccalilli_/status/1344378850545979394
RWD is so brilliant. But I always think it's tricky with our modern component libraries. It feels like you have to micromanage everything. 'Make sure you fit in this sidebar, but make your font size bigger at this breakpoint and move over here...' 5/10
Another hurdle IWD has, which @argyleink always talks about, is that UX design tools just can't replicate what the browser can do these days. Designers can't visualise the incredible things they can achieve, now, with CSS, unless they also understand CSS. 6/10
And maybe the Web platform still doesn't provide us with all the tools that we need yet? The @csswg are still figuring out how browsers can support Container Queries (and it's a really hard problem to solve without potentially causing infinite loops). 7/10
But @jensimmons has been telling us for years that we can do Container Queries NOW (almost), with the magic of modern CSS layout methods! And we need to keep banging that drum. (And you need to watch her original IWD talk, if you haven't already https://noti.st/jensimmons/eK4aDd) 8/10
When you watch it, you can really see what she means when she says this is a new era in how we do layout on the Web. And I really do believe in that vision. There's so much cool and revolutionary stuff we could be doing. 9/10
We need more resources. We need better search results when you google 'Intrinsic Web Design'. We need websites to start doing it and show the rest of us how it can be done. Can 2021 finally be the year of IWD? I hope we can all make it happen! 😀 10/10
