Time for my #freelancer #YearEnd2020 look back at this strange year in media: I had 96 stories published mostly online but some notable print ones as well. 18 others have been submitted and are in queue to get published, were bumped due to pandemic, or are in some stage of edits
I also launched the #contentmarketing side of my business and have a handful of regulars there which has been an enjoyable and stable stream of income.
As for favorite pieces/outlets, here are my #TopTen2020
My first for @TravelLeisure digital was all about my Midwestern homeland ($250) https://www.travelandleisure.com/trip-ideas/road-trips/best-midwest-road-trips-in-the-us
My first for @TravelLeisure digital was all about my Midwestern homeland ($250) https://www.travelandleisure.com/trip-ideas/road-trips/best-midwest-road-trips-in-the-us
My first pitch ever to @nytimes ended in this op-ed ($250) https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/10/opinion/coronavirus-nebraska-social-distancing.html
My first for @EaterTwinCities about the stellar wine bars in Minneapolis + St. Paul ($55--some of the city verticals pay far less than national Eater) https://twincities.eater.com/maps/best-twin-cities-bars-wine-minneapolis-st-paul
I occasionally write about startups/innovation for outlets like @crunchbasenews. This look at STL was a fun exercise ($650) https://news.crunchbase.com/news/gateway-to-startup-success-innovation-grows-in-missouri/
A fun print travel feature in @rovamagazine all about the Willamette Valley and how there's so much more to do than drink wine, although the wine is excellent of course! ($200)

I strategically focuses on aviation as a niche this year - something I know a fair amount about as a perk of being married to a pilot - which lead to my first for @DeparturesMag digital ($300) https://www.departures.com/travel/future-of-private-aviation-after-covid-pandemic
Another luxe aviation piece, which was my first actual feature for @CNTraveler digital after having contributed to a multiple authors project previously ($350) https://www.cntraveler.com/story/on-these-private-jets-no-meal-request-is-too-outrageous
After 6 months of pitching, I broke into @readersdigest with this pretty peninsulas piece ($150) https://www.rd.com/list/gorgeous-peninsulas-in-the-u-s/
My first in-flight magazine piece, a milestone I was determined to hit in 2020. Love @hemispheresmag for letting me write about Omaha's Little Bohemia neighborhood for their FOB section ($450). This was also my first $1.50 per word piece!

And I write at least an article per month for the stellar regional publication @omahamagazine. This Home feature was one of my favorites of 2020. Don't discount regional pubs for consistent work! ($150) https://www.omahamagazine.com/2020/10/28/331871/oh-christmas-trees-holiday-spirit-abounds-in-council-bluffs-home
Bonus: One of my favorite outlets to contribute to this year was @Thrillist. I wrote five digital features, all about the Midwest, for their travel vertical. Three were pitched, two were assigned, four paid $300 and one paid $225 at height of pandemic. https://www.thrillist.com/search?q=katy+spratte+joyce
Additionally, I broke into other great outlets like @EatingWell @WhiskeyWash @fodorstravel @lonelyplanet @AptTherapy @FiftyGrandeMag @ROUTEMagazine66 @SciOnTapAAAS and @thekitchn (DM me for specific rates if you have questions!)
