If you are a trainee do not agree to working a 3 on 3 off rota.

Whilst a lovely idea back in March - it will mean working > 1 in 2 frequency weekends for which there is no agreed fair method of paying you
Dont agree to a rota that breaches the contract as it will exhaust you & your colleagues at a time when we are all broken

Only agree to an escalation Rota that they have agreed to what they will pay you (work schedule)
too many examples of trusts double crossing trainees & not paying them

If your trust has waited till now to escalate / discuss get the bma involved to protect & lobby for you

Or reach out to JDC members online
They must factor in annual leave/ study leave to what they decide - people have interviews, exams and recovery time already booked

Don’t forget that many have caring commitments / children / LTFT considerations to factor in

Don’t forget pay protection
If you are a surgical trainee are you absolutely needed is a question that is needed.

As short as possible Rota escalation and regular review are essential

There are examples of good trusts being proactive and having these discussions early
There are also trusts who have come up with good solutions to redeploying trainees whilst minimising disruption to trainees themselves.

You each of you are awesome don’t accept second best just because your trust hadn’t used the last 8 months to prepare
If worst comes to worst work “under protest” then we can take a trust to Employment tribunal at a later date to support you
also don't forget to have a BMA rep (LNC rep) to support you in discussions with your trust as they can escalate through their own processes to support you
