Alright so, 2020 was a shit show of a year. Let’s talk about lessons I really hope have been learned (but doubt have tbqh) from my perspective as a disaster response expert. (Not touching the US govt issues this thread)
1. Listen to your experts. Example- When you have a disaster response expert in your company telling you shit is about to get bad, listen to them.
2. Resilience is key. Build for resilience not to a situation. Don’t build your plans for the next COVID, build your shit to be able to adapt to whatever is next.
3. There will never be another COVID. Learn what a Black Swan event is. The next event will be different, but you can apply things you learned in 2020 to them.
4. Empathy. No matter how well you as a business build your plans for disasters, remember that your employees are impacted. Try giving a shit about their well being. It goes a long way.
5. AARs can save your ass. Do an after action report on 2020- what worked, what really didn’t, then figure out how to fix what didn’t for the future. (Examples available on request on this one)
6. After the disaster has happened is too late to start thinking of having a plan.
7. Stop thinking of disasters as just things that happen somewhere that gets earthquakes or hurricanes. Disasters can hit anywhere and everywhere.
8. Put down your damn ego and ask for help. How many times did I get told something was under control or I was worrying too much...only a month later to be proven right.
9. No system stands alone. No matter how much you might like to think it does- redundancy is your friend. Lack of redundancy in crisis planning all but guarantees failure
10. Failure brings me to my last point- be prepared to redefine success for your business. Yeah we all had goals at the beginning of 2020, but a lot of shit happened. Be ready to redefine success while you deal with a crisis.
There you have it 10 things I hope companies/leaders have learned this year.
And before anybro comes at me that I don’t understand how shit works- trust me I have the resume to shut that line of condescending bs down. So let’s skip that part k?
