Thread: my favorite videos of 2020. First: rough night for spring peepers (April 2020), as they are caught by painted turtle, then predaceous diving beetle, and finally bullfrog. I was struck that peepers kept calling next to predators consuming their colleagues. #NewYear 1/n
Second: juvenile green anole (Anolis carolinensis) doing little headbobs and caudal twitching while hunting flies on Hydrangea flowers. Watched several anoles do the same thing towards insects, and am wondering if it is some luring / distracting behavior? July 2020. 2/n
Third: Fishfly larvae crawling around underwater below a thin layer of ice in a pond in March 2020. These insects live in the water as larvae, and then metamorphose to fly away as adults. This one was seen in the day while checking Ambystoma salamander traps. 3/n
Because 2020 was 2020, I didn't take many videos of calling frogs. But I was happy with this video of a singing spring peeper recorded in March 2020. 4/n
Also was able to record this pickerel frog growling among the cattails. I have found it difficult to observe this species calling, but seem to have gotten better at it over the last couple years. 5/n
A less-common perspective on frog mating: underwater view of mating American Toads. Watch carefully to see the strings of eggs move as the female lays them. The male clinging to her back fertilizes them. 6/n
And a short dive underwater to swim with the Jefferson's Salamanders in March 2020 7/n
