I’d like us to dump both overrated and underrated from the cultural lexicon when it comes to talking about art, sports, etc. I think both terms are used as a cop out to avoid saying why you like or dislike like things more than a majority. There’s better ways to do that.
John Carter is a movie I love that’s not underrated. Underseen? Maybe. But also takes the flack it probably deserves, even if I think it’s misunderstood as well. My opinion doesn’t override why a majority may not like it though and that’s totally fine!
Similarly, overrated is just used to tear down a thing a lot of people like that you don’t. It’s okay to simply not go with popular opinion, but it doesn’t make something lesser for being beloved by others. I don’t love Titanic, but it’s not overrated. It deserves its accolades.
Anyway, think about that the next time you’re talking about things. There are better ways to approach discourse than using those terms, and your arguments and reasoning will be better for it. I promise.
