Sōpānaṁ : 5 : The Mount of the divine bull ( Rishabhāchala )

The memory of the divine form of the mysterious Brāhmaṇa kept Sivaguru awake for long that night. Two divine names from Sri Rudram kept reverbrating within him - ‘ नमः कपर्दिने च व्युप्तकेशाय च ‘ ( ‘prostrations to the one with matted locks ; prostrations to the one with shaven
head’). Absorbed in the vibrations of the chant, Sivaguru slowly dozed off.
Along with it, the mantra नमः कपर्दिने च arose within. ‘Kapardi’ means ‘ one with the matted hair ’. While being absorbed in that divine vision of Lord Siva, a brilliant glow of light emanated from it. That radiant glow gradually transformed into the form of a divine sage with
a shaven head and the mantra ’ व्युप्तकेशाय च ‘ arose within. ‘Vyuptakēsa means ‘one who has no hair on the head’. Then he saw both these forms dissolving in a radiant linga, and the linga shining on a hilltop. He also heard a voice from the heavens announcing : ‘This hill is
Rishabhāchala ( today’s Trichur ).
The whole experience was as clear as though it happened in the waking state. Sivaguru up at dawn with the vivid memory of the vision.
Before long on an auspicious day, the couple set out for the land of Siva ( Trichur ).
In those days, the river Purna was flowing near the temple of Rishabhāchalēswara (now Vadakkunnātha ).After taking a holy dip in the river & they began their austerities.
One night, Sivaguru had a vision and the following transpired between him & Lord Siva :-
Divine Incarnation :
Days & months went by, Aryamba had several divine visions. In her dreams she saw Siva riding the bull followed by Sanaka, Sanandana and the other sages. These signs indicated the divine nature of the Being, growing in the Womb. As per tradition, the rituals '
pumsavanam’ (3rd month) & ‘ Śimantōnnayana ’ (6th month) was held. In the 10th month, The divine child was born at the Abhijit muhurta of the month of VaiŚākha (Mēsha), in the karkitaka lagnam on the day of Śuklapanchami (5th day after the new moon), in the star ‘punarvasu’.
लग्नेशुभे शुभयुते सुषुवे कुमारं
श्री पार्वतीव सुखिनी शुभवीक्षिते च |
जाया सती शिवगुरोः निजतुङ्ग संस्ते
सूर्येकुजे रविसुते च गुरौचकेन्द्रे ||

"On an auspicious lagna when all the auspicious planets stood in the appropriate positions Sivaguru’s devout wife
gave birth to the divine child, as Sri Parvati gave birth to Lord Subrahmanya.’
The midwife came out with the news of the child’s birth. “ A bay boy is born, shining like burnished gold.” Sivaguru was chanting ‘Sri Rudram’ at that time. As the news of the child’s birth was
received while chanting the mantra नमः शंकराय च in the anuvāka, ’somaya cha’, anon the informal naming ceremony of the child took place within the heart of Sivaguru.
Our real nature is Absolute Existence, birthless, deathless, changeless, pure chitsukham (blissful Consciousness),
the self or Ātman. It is the ahankāra, the ego, which appears as ‘I’, delimited by the body. This ‘I-thought’ is ‘mulavidya’ - primal ignorance. If the nature of this ‘I-thought is enquired into, the real nature of the ‘I’ will shine forth. That is Paramātma Himself.
शिवम शिवकारम शांतम शिवात्मनम शिवोतमम I
शिवमर्ग प्राणहरम प्रणेतारं प्रणतोस्मि सदाशिवम् II
‘Auspicious, bestower of benediction, ever peaceful, the divine self, the Supreme Being, the revealer of the divine path, unto Him, Sadāsiva, the ever Gracious One, I bow’.
Thus ends the fifth Sōpānaṁ.
