the biggest failure of 2020 is making async communication ok, we need more synchronous discussions in the remote working culture. less chat, more video face to video face until we can have more organic conversations. there's room for chat in less important discussions.
chat is super useful for ChatOps, social/back channels, and even things like PR notifications on things that aren't major adds. things that really need better understanding between parties in my career come from more synchronous conversations. chat doesnt come with nuance.
how you do this at your place is your decision. these are my experiences.
im no devops author or expert, i am no SRE supergod, i am not smarter than anyone else. i just have worked in environments that treat standups like a hangout and not a real piece of value. when they go to chat, it's a paragraph with little discussion of the group.
if you have boundaries, a set goal for standups and time limits on each part, you're gonna have less mishegoss
that's right, i used yiddish. im an old jewish man who rebooted computers for 15 years
