Wanna hear a secret?

I haven’t been contributing to my retirement since not working full-time to be a stay at home dad. But luckily, being stuck at home during this pandemic has given me extra time to overthink and worry.

So I started researching about investing.

(Apologies ahead of time but I got to get these thoughts out because a lot of this is advice I wish I knew to share with my X-students when I taught high school. But I’ve also been obsessing about missing teaching high school a lot during this pandemic.)

I have some investments with Merrill Lynch... and really don’t understand how those work or are working for me. Their app is intimidating and probably made for people who know what they're doing. So, not me.

So I don't touch it.

Instead, I embraced my millennial-side and, with podcasts and YouTube, researched investment apps Acorn, Robin Hood, and Cash app.

So here's my impressions so far...

I ❤️ the @RobinhoodApp’ layout for presenting stats! I love ❤️ using the slider to easily see a company’ growth over 5 years! It makes it easier to predict possible future growth but also se where the company struggled. #adulting

But I also love how they curate information using “analyst ratings” recommending whether to buy, hold, or sell a stock AND a summary of pros and cons. A great informational multimodal text for classroom use, BTW! #EDTECH #adulting

So I also really love the @acorns app for some different reasons. If you were never taught investing or never read “Rich Dad, Poor Dad,” it is awesome for walking you through and giving easy to understand learning material!

It also provides so many opportunities to encourage you to save money, make money, and automate it for you. I really love my Bank of America account but if I needed a bank account, I would use this.

However it isn’t free like Robin Hood...

There is a $1 a month fee (which I think is worth it for access to the learning material alone) And can go up to $5 a month depending on which extra services you sign up for, and there are a lot of really great services. #adulting

I ❤️ having an @acorns portfolio to watch and track growth.

In a little over a week I’ve already made over $7.

That may not sound like a lot but it is more than I’ve ever earned in a savings account or podcasting or YouTubing or TPT.

I mean, I had a lot of issues trying teachers-pay-teachers in the first place...

As for the cash app, I haven’t started exploring that yet just because I don’t need a checking or debit card because I’m really happy with @BankofAmerica right now.

So for what it’s worth, ☝🏽there’s my status update after almost two weeks playing investor. Wish I started earlier. I wish these apps were around for me to talk about with my high school students back in the day. I’ll definitely talk about them with my kids.

And Acorn, which I love because it automates everything for me, also gives you an extra five bucks to play with.
