Deleuze talk: so it seems like it’s safe to conclude that the most coherent defense that free market proponents could mount was tldr “be willing to die for the economy”
The plan to limit business capacity (at least temporary) and wear masks was too much of an infringement on freedom. Full shutdowns were unthinkable because it’d probably force the question of wealth inequality and redistribution
so it seems like we have a war machine situation - and it looks like there’s a large portion of America who actually takes covid seriously or at least won’t openly defy the government to forcefully reopen the economy.
What is fascinating to watch is the role of relatively open places now - I have no desire to travel to Houston or Atlanta or Tampa but it’d be interesting to see how perceptions of place and pandemic are there.
More broadly it seems like the doxic function of capitalism makes discussion of plans to save the economy superfluous until they’re not. A lot of discourse and planning to grow and expand economies but the only salient threat to the free market from its proponents is socialism.
Meanwhile covid is upgrading.
The issue with making plans to save the economy is that you have to think outside the bounds of the economy which may lead to rationales and goals irreducible to its dictates.
