i think casting gal gadot says a lot about how warner bros/dc comics thinks about wonder woman as a character.
you'd think they would be inventive and smart in casting one of the most fascinating, long running comic book characters. instead we got this.
i'd like to write a wonder woman run. i'd kill it since i actually love the character and her mythos, rather than trying to make her into something else. (azzarello, i'm looking at you.)
the reason i get so worked up about wonder woman as a character is how inherently her mythos is very feminine and her story is so much about how she relates to other women. something these movies don't care about.
also, her made from clay origin is actually v weird and radical in a fun way, further highlighting how women (whether her mother hippolyta or goddesses like athena) have shaped diana into who she is as a hero.
we will likely not see a film as rich as greg rucka's story "the hiketeia" which gets so many points for have wonder woman hand batman his ass multiple times. it's what he deserves!!
also, i was reminded of this by a comment, but gal gadot being cast as wonder woman reflects the lack of GREAT stars being cultivated.
in my wonder woman run steve trevor would be nowhere to be found and diana would finally be seen in a swooning romance with a woman. also, my wonder woman fucks.
i can really talk a lot about wonder woman lol. can y'all see how obsessed i am with the character on the page?
i think wonder woman can be a really fascinating way to discuss power, privilege, femininity, what it means to live in a country that isn't your home, and remain hopeful in a dire world. ain't shit like that in these damn movies.
