One of the things find interesting is how certain players are "inconsistent". Usually when I hear a player is "inconsistent" they either just tend to fluctuate with how good their tech skill is, or that they tend to have "defaults" that work against higher level players 1/3
These players tend to have access to play players better than them and tend to make upsets a ton, but can frequently be upset themselves. I usually find that these players are pretty good in sets, but don't really know how to adapt their options for the player they're playing 2/3
This leads to these players being "countered" by players who may be considered worse than them because their opponents' defaults tend to beat them. 3/3
At a certain point, better players tend to adapt much quicker than those who were losing to these types of players, and unless their tech skill was extremely off, you don't see these players upsetting players who are better than a certain skill range
