(1) Regardless of whether one supports BBI or not, @IEBCKenya gaffe this morning raises questions about the internal process of vetting information from both state and non-state institutions and who should ultimately take responsibility for communication that goes to the public
(2) with the potential to cause disaffection or even chaos. Communication with the capacity to cause pandemonium could range from inaccurate election results to announcements based on mistaken identity, contamination of health results or medicines/vaccines, etc.
(3) Surely there must be a robust policy on how an institution communicates with the public and a vetting mechanism that ensures review of messages. More and more in the bid for our public institutions to convey messages, we have seen informality become normalized.
(4) The consequences of messaging in Radio Stations and Newspapers in neighbouring Rwanda need no re-telling and evidently @IEBCKenya need to review their policies and implementation strategies on communication to the public to avoid unnecessary angst.
