The strong emphasis on the Imago Dei which had been developed amongst theologians and Christian lay people during the abolition movement influenced every aspect of society
In the 19th century it was not enough to say "we cannot treat black slaves as lesser humans", the same logic was applied to the inhabitants of asylums, kids up chimneys, orphans, etc
This logic inspired Buxton, Shaftesbury, Butler, Spurgeon, Wilberforce to fight for reform
