The Baalbek temple is a monumental 2000 year old temple to Jupiter that sits atop 3000 ton stone blocks.

The Baalbek valley has been settled since at least 9,000 BC, & in Bible times it was the site of gory human sacrifices to Baal, the Canaanite god of fertility..

Baalbek was renamed ‘Heliopolis’ after being conquered by the Greeks..

Later, it was used by the Romans as a foundation for a new temple complex that took 250 years to build..

The most notable Roman buildings in the complex were temples of Bacchus, Jupiter & Venus. Together, these made up one of the largest temples of Roman Empire..

Over the years, the temple of Baalbek (aka Heliopolis) was damaged pretty extensively by earthquakes & plundered for stone.
 
At different times in history, it’s been occupied by Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, & even Mongols.. (4/10)

The construction of this expansive temple at Baalbek was begun by the Phoenicians between 3000-4000 years ago. The Greeks then added to it, followed by Romans & much later the Arabs..

curious facts about the Baalbek temple are the stone lotuses carved on the temple’s ceilings !

That is intriguing ! because there‘re no lotuses in Lebanon.

Among the roof stones, there is a clear anahata symbol, with 6 petals & 2 interlocking triangles.

Above all, there is a stone with 16 corners called a Guru Pooja stone..

seems elephants (where did they come from ?) were used to lift these stones weighing upto 800 tonnes
