1/7 For anyone still struggling to get their captions to not cover their presentation / poster in their flash talk & then save the whole thing as an MP4 ready to upload for #vVMSG2021 I have a couple of tips/ workarounds that me & @huetor_vega were pondering.

2/7 If you used YouTube to generate your captions, you can edit them in YouTube Studio to get them looking the way you want.
You can't download a fresh MP4 that has the captions already in place (BOO) but you can record your screen while the Youtube video plays...

3/7 One way to do this is to get a free trial of Camtasia if you don't already - other screen recording apps are available!

4/7 Download your captions from YouTube as a .srt file. Import your video to camtasia then add the .srt file using the closed captions tab.
Highlight the text in one of your captions and adjust the size - WARNING may no longer comply with ADA standards

5/7 To do this, select the pointy cursor at the top and click on your media, you will see little dots appear at the corners, click and drag to shrink until the subtitles no longer block your key content. Make sure this doesn't make your text/diagrams too small.

6/7 Head all this off at the start by checking the extent of the subtitles boxes before you create your ppt and leave some blank space at the bottom of each slide!
Make a dummy video with a blank slide and add some captions manually in camtasia to check where they reach to.

7/7 If someone knows a better way do tell! :)
The issue here is that usually one uploads the video & captions as 2 files & the hosting site/app overlays the subs. This means you lose control over the style of the captions unless the host is where you edited them originally.

Oops an extra bit of info!
To make SURE your captions appear in the final MP4 you need to select "burned in captions" when you export the camtasia file!

You can also choose "below video" captions which may solve the re-sizing problem completely
