I'm so sick of people calling Erasmus elitist. Yes, it was generally for people who had bothered to learn another European language. I think it says a lot about English entitlement that people are now bemoaning lack of access when they only spoke English
Every single European I knew who did Erasmus spoke their native language, plus English, and usually another language besides. Why should monoglots be allowed a place alongside these students when they are unlikely to cope with eg being cross-examined in Italian?
You probably didn't hear about it at uni because you weren't that interested in languages! Literally every language student I knew chose their course partly because of Erasmus. It was all over the prospectuses.
If you want to join a community - in this case the European community - at least trying to speak another language is basic politeness.
