Winter precipitation in form of snow is naturelly stored on the highlands & makes the water source for summer season. Despite spring precipiation contribution to pasture revivial, groundwater recharge and dryland farming, it has limited impact on summer water demand. 3/6
More than 75% of Afghans live from agriculture and use surface water for irrigation. thus, drought will directly affect their livelihood. Drought will cause food shortage an internal displacement . 4/6
Lack of water storage infrastructure will hurt Afghanistan‘s agriculture sector. In the past two decades, few major water storage projects are constructed. Salma dam in Herat with (560 MCM) is the only finished major water storage project. 5/6
Despite the importance of water storage infrastructure in Afghanistan‘s economy, apart from 300 million $ investment of India on Salma dam, there has been no other major investment in water sector of Afghanistan. 6/6
