Steve Bruce isn’t a victim of #NUFC delusions. He joined the club in July 2019 as already the statistically worst manager the Premier League had ever seen. His last real job was at Aston Villa; in which he left them 12th in THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
I say real job; because Newcastle actually touted Bruce from Sheffield Wednesday. He, only a day before; told the fans of the Hillsborough club that he had every intention to stay. His lack of loyalty already started him on the wrong foot with such a loyal fanbase at NUFC.
Bruce’s first game was pathetic. A rainy opening day defeat against Arsenal would ultimately pave the way for what was to come: soulless, unidentified football that swayed from everything built by the previous manager.
Now, any man who hasn’t got the ability to do something will generally use something else to gain fanbase trust. For Bruce it was the cups. “Oh Rafa didn’t care about cups? Well guess who does” - that sort of thing.
This at first looked to have worked; full sides played in cups were admittedly few and far between during Ashley’s tenure and Bruce’s new outlook gave fans at least a fresh outlook! Until you realise he has to manage it.
Bruce was embarrassed and OUTPLAYED by teams at League One and Two level; sometimes at home. He scraped through games against Rochdale, Oxford and this season Newport County.
Bruce kept the club up in 2019/20. He classed it as an achievement but ultimately bottling the very cups he promised an attempt at and failing to break the points total recorded by Rafa; it was not a success.
During the summer transfer window of 2020; Bruce spent millions on proven PL targets such as Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis and added Ryan Fraser to the ranks. More money than ANY previous manager in the MA era.
Newcastle United, with a forward line of ASM, Callum Wilson, Fraser, Miguel Almiron and Joelinton, looked certain to be in the top ten. Bruce has his squad now, right? He said as much: “The top ten is the target, for sure.”
He then changed the remit to “we just want to stay up.”
He then changed the remit to “we just want to stay up.”
Even that seems a lie. Newcastle have sat on the edge of their own box since the season began. We have scraped every victory we have and quite frankly it’s a miracle we have a point on the board.
We have not blown one team away all season. We have not had a plan and executed it well in one game. The players look embarrassed when they score. I’m frankly embarrassed to watch it. 20th for every stat; how can anyone argue that?
The excuses. The lies. He blames Covid one week then insists it can’t be used; then he blames injuries as if no club has them. But the real gripe comes next.
What has finally turned the screw for Bruce and what will make his position here untenable; is his commencing of war on the fans.
Now, Newcastle fans are hard work at times from a lifelong supporter. But we have done nothing but ACTUALLY support this club (not pretend to, Steven) throughout everything.
We’ve stuck by your tactics, we’ve watched these games, we’ve spent our money, we’ve gave you the chance - I mean, we aren’t even allowed in the ground to put pressure on - and yet it’s our fault.
From me to you Steve, from an actual fan, not a Man United fan who throws in the occasional wor and howay - you will never ever be one of us. It’s time for you to go. We won’t be blamed for your inability.
If you are a pundit, or a journalist, or anyone who thinks Newcastle fans want the Champions League and that’s why we don’t want Bruce; hang up your pen and your mics.
We ask for respect and ambition.
It wasn’t a “hard job” for Sir Bobby.
It wasn’t a “hard job” for Kevin Keegan.
It wasn’t a “hard job” for Rafa Benitez.
