My Christmas week is done.

I have been quiet about Crisis this Christmas, because I haven't known how to talk about it.

It's been such a varied year for my friends, some have pivoted businesses and become little success stars, others have faced redundancy, some lost...
loved ones and have not been able to acknowledge it in a way that makes sense, or like myself lost a massive part of their income while also being ineligible for any government support.

The week at Crisis had some of these stories.

With restrictions in place it was unlike...
anything else I have ever experienced. Trying to offer comfort without quiet voices, closeness or touch, all while wearing a mask was difficult. Especially when it came to those with mental health challenges.

I met uber/taxi drivers, construction workers, shop workers...
a social worker and a masseuse.

Thankfully we could check in with our guests each day in brief transactional conversations when delivering food to rooms or reminding them to gel their hands when entering the building.

Over the last week, we helped secure longer term...
housing for some. Hopefully with another week ahead and another shift team and our call centre looking out for our guests, bridges can be built on gaps yet unseen or unmended.

One of my final brief interactions came an hour before the end of this last shift. The guy came to...
get a banana. He said "My life can be described with 3 letters B, C, D. B stands for Birth, D stands for Death, & C can stand for whatever you choose, my C stands for Choice. From now on I choose my life will be better". It's amazing what a few days secure sleep & food can do...
It has been a whirlwind this time with a shift team of no more than 16 instead of a couple of hundred, but I am still grateful for the experience.

The change has taught me a lot. And going into next years, when inevitably provision is still needed to support those most in...
need, there are things that we can make better for our guests because what we have learnt this year.

Thank you to all of those that have offered support so @crisis_uk and other charities that help people at their lowest point can do what they do...
Homelessness shouldn't be a thing. It costs less to prevent homelessness than to deal with the fallout the other side of it.
